Greg Martin

A native of Louisville, Greg has been around music most of his life: his uncle was a Honky Tonk musician and his father and brothers also played music. Greg picked up an old acoustic guitar that the family had stashed away and started to play the guitar more regularly. A move for the family introduced him to new people, including Richard Young. Martin says, “Music, it was just a calling, I like to say – it chose me. I’m glad it did, it gave me something I can do.”

Greg played in a number of bands as he grew his skill and reputation as a guitar player. He played Gospel and anything else he could: “I would play anywhere just to get the experience, I just loved playing that much, you know?”

Greg eventually became part of the band Itchy Brothers. After a series of other musical ventures and moves, Itchy Brothers renamed itself to the Kentucky Headhunters. They cut a tracklist on a pink cassette tape, which prompted interest from record labels. They signed with Mercury Records and released their first record in 1989. They’ve been together for nearly 50 years and have made many albums together, achieving international success, Grammy and Billboard Awards, and remaining a beloved local band. They still play over fifty shows a year, all over the world. They continue releasing music to this day.

Greg continues to live in the region, stating, “Playing Bowling Green was like going to the moon”.
